Letters received as part of Goodna Asylum records show that John Stephens Harvey snr had difficult paying for the upkeep of his children and especially his son in the asylum. In those days, family had to pay for relatives in the asylum. In August 1892, he was living in Howard near Maryborough, and had debts to his grocer, baker, and doctor. He was supporting 4 children residing at Tramway Estate, Wooloongabba, Brisbane.
September 1895, he was living and working (sawing) at Eungella, inland from Mackay. He went there to drive the horsewhip in the mine, but found the mine closed. He was in debt to the grocer and butcher, and could not pay for his son.
In April 1896 (at Eungella) He reported he still could not afford to pay anything, and the man he had been working for had kept the pay owed to him, and he was now working on a cattle station for a Mr Tooth, cutting and sawing timber.
