Notes for English (Spouse 1)
I recently obtained a copy of the will of English
Stephen (nee Sampson). She wrote it 10 January 1798 and had unfortunately
died by May that year. I have included the details in the following
account
of her life.

When English was 31 she married John Stephens from Wendron. They seemed to travel around, because her three chidren were born at Cury. Within ten years they were farming Gwavis, Sithney. They both died young, possibly from some epidemic. English was 46 years old. In 1798 she described herself as 'of Crowan', but gave firm instructions for her burial to be at Sithney Parish Church. She was a widow with young children; aged 13, 11 and 10 years. In her will she gave one guinea to Rosamond Williams, her maidservant and two guineas to Edward Pooley, her manservant. She wanted her executors to employ him - saying he was 'a trusty, deserving and honest servant'. She asked her cousins - Richard Sampson and Francis Holman to be trustees of her estate and see her children got their inheritance. There is no mention of who was to care for them; so arrangements must have already been made.
