Notes for Isaac (Spouse 1)
Isaac grew up, and on the 12th June 1796; he married Sarah Smith in Tavistock Parish Church. It will be seen from the tracing of the certificate that Isaac is described as a Miller, and that he was illiterate: Sarah wrote her own name, It will also be noticed that they were married under the name of Dawe (with an “e”) Isaac, presumably was not in a position to point out the error.
A miller. He resided at Mill Hill, Lamerton,1818-1822, Newton Hill, Tavistock 1823-1851, Lumburn, Tavistock in the 1851 Census and is listed in Whilte’s Directory in 1850.
These are Lamerton Land Tax records, 1780 to 1832, Micro 1471089, item 16.
Isaac Dawe leased, rented, or just was given the occupation of the mill from His Grace, the Duke of Bedford from 1797 to and including 1824. Before and after those dates, other names are given as the occupier. The tax assessed was one pound 2 shillings until 1820, when it rose to one pound six shillings 5 pence.
He must have been given the use of the mill shortly after he was married in 1796. Can we assume he died about 1824? His son Isaac Smith, was a miller at Mill Hill Quarries, Lamerton until at least 1821, and by 1823 was in Tavistock. (See baptisms of his 1st 3 children) So I don’t think it was Isaac Smith who was the miller up to 1824, but was Isaac Senior.
But if Isaac died at Lamerton in 1824, why wasn’t he buried in Lamerton Church?, where his children had all been baptised. Or did he lose the rights as miller for some cause, and merely moved somewhere else?
Other than checking a few parishes that had Dawe members born there from the 1851 census, to see if I could find an Isaac, I didn’t find anything more of any significance.

The informant of the death was his son Nathaniel Daw (also a Miller) who at the time of his father’s death lived at Bedford Cottage, Tavistock . Plymouth, with his wife Tamson (48) and their two sons Isaac (15) and Nathaniel (10).
On the death certificate the surname of Isaac and is spelt “Daw” without the final “e”.
