Notes for William (Spouse 1)
The name CROOKE is derived from Norse name meaning CROW (a favorite bird of the Norse god ODIN. The crow brought him
messages from around the world) Robert Croc came over to Scotland with Walter, the first High Steward. The place name
CROOKSTOWN, south west of Glasgow indicates a dwelling of Crook or Croc family (sourceā€¦The surnames of Scotland Black 1946).

William CROOKE and Elizabeth Hawes CROSS, acquired DEREEN HOUSE about 1740 on a lease for
2,999 years. It was paid for in a transaction by Epenitus Crooke as part of his sister's marriage settlement, as well as funds from her
husband (William). Jane Moore Cross lived there until 1890. She married Simon Davies Crooke who was great grandson of William
Crooke. Jane was descended from both Elizabeth Hawes Cross' brother and sister Catherine Cross.
