"CHARLES RIPPER, A.R.C.A. 'In Coastal Waters' signed and dated 1910. Oil on pine panel 10 x 13¨ inches.
Charles Ripper was born in Devonport on the 4th March 1864 the son of John Ripper (engineer). He studied at the Royal College of Art winning various silver and bronze medals and other prizes, receiving his diploma in 1904. He is recorded as a painter and etcher living and working in Lancaster and becoming headmaster of the School of Art, Storey Institute in the same town. He was also Art Examiner to the Northern Universities and a Member of the Joint Board and National Society of Art Masters. There is no record of him exhibiting in any of the major Galleries but he painted in a stylised manner, with attractive colour tones, as shown by this pleasant example of his work."

The painting was expected to sell for between £500 and £1,000.
