Edward, only surviving child of John Newbigin and Elizabeth Campbell, was bom in 1797. He opened a butcher's shop in Blenheim Street. Newcastle and there he met the daughter of a baker of ship's biscuits. Mary Ann Lesslie was daughter to James Lesslie and Ann Johnstone. who hailed from Burnitsland in the Firth of Forth. From their marriage in 1827, the two surnames have become linked to all their descendants.
There were in fact, eleven children and after the mother's death Edward decided to emigrate to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne with three of his sons. John Campbell. Edward and Thomas Lesslie, in 1854

Descendants of a later generation - grandson William Johnstone and great-grandson Harold -were also to seek a home in Australia.
