Notes for John (Spouse 1)
Dec 27th 1855 - John and Isabella are mar at St James Episcopal church, Leith.
witnesses - William Reid
               - James Reid
On their mar record, Isabella is showing as 28yrs and a Servant. John is shown as 33yrs and a Sawyer. Isabella's father is shown as a Ploughman and John's father William is also shown as a Sawyer.
Isabella's mother is listed as Margaret Grossert but unfortunately doesn't list her maiden name. she may still be alive at this time as it doesn't state "dec'd" either but we know her mother died before May 1857 (see notes on Margaret Irvine)
John's mother is listed as Christian Reid nee Chase, dec'd.
Their address is 43 St Andrews St. Leith.
The record also shows Isabella's birthplace as Gilmerton and John's as Donegal, Ireland.

1861 census - The family are still at Redford Close - still 4 children and father still a Sawyer.

24th July 1861 - son John is bap at St James Episcopal Church; his father John is listed as a Sawyer on this record.
20th Dec 1861 - son James is born in Coborg? Lane, North Leith. He is registered as "James White Reid" and John is still shown as a Sawyer.
4th April 1862 - siblings William, Christina and James are all bap at St James Episcopal Church, South Leith and their father John is listed as a Sawyer AND a Soldier (needs further research on this - May 2009)
19th Oct 1864 - Isabella gives birth to twins - Alison and Ebenezer. The address on the birth records is "Back of Vaults" Leith. John is listed as a Sawyer /journeyman.
16th June 1867 - daughter Alison dies at the young age of 2years 8months of Measles. She dies at 42 Kirkgate, Leith.
19th June 1867 - son James, less than 6 yrs old also dies of Measles 3 days later at 42 Kirkgate. This must have been a devastating time for the family. Both deaths were registered together on the 19th June by Isabella which she initialed with a X ( shown as "her X mark" ) This was the practice when the person concerned was unable to write.

1871 census - The family are now at 2 Stain Alley, Leith.
John ( father) is still listed as a Sawyer and born in Donegal. His 2 older sons are now working - William, 20 yrs is a labourer and Robert,16 yrs is shown as a confectioner. John 12yrs is listed as a scholar. Alison and Ebenezer are not showing on this census with the family.(either they have died or they are with another family member maybe )
NEW INFORMATION (Jan 2009) I have now found the death of daughter Alison. She died in 1867- see note above.
Christina is no longer with the family but working as a servant (housemaid) to the Laidlaw family in Leith at Abbotsford Place.

Sept 28th 1877 - John dies at SOUTH LEITH POORHOUSE. His death cert listed him as formerly a wood sawyer and widower, aged 55yrs, parents unknown; no mention of his late wife's name and informant is the Govenor of the workhouse.
I AM SURE this is our John but I wonder why he wasn't being cared for by his family; is there any connection with him not being the informant of his wife's death? (need to check Poor House records if available - April 2008)
Sons Robert, William and John were all living local at this time.
I have now traced Christina (daughter of John and Isabella) mar to George Watters who also lived locally but their lives are short lived and tell a sorry tale too for their family, involving the SOUTH LEITH POORHOUSE. (see fam notes under Christina and George) ( July 2008)
